Plug stuck? How to release the connector

Don't force it — your car's charging port locks the cable during a session for safety. Pulling hard can damage the port.

1. Confirm charging has stopped

Check both the JOLT app (shows "Completed") and your car's screen. If it's still active, stop it by:

  • Ending the session in the JOLT app, or
  • Ending it from your car's screen, or
  • Pressing the silver 'Push to Stop' button on the charger

If you have tried all of the above and still cannot stop your charge, please contact our emergency support line, found by navigating to Help and Support in the JOLT app.

2. Try your car's release

  • Press Unlock on your key fob 3–5 times quickly, or
  • Look for an "Unlock Port" option in your car's charging menu

3. Use your car's manual release

Most EVs have a manual cable release inside the car — check your owner's manual, as the location varies by model.

Quick Finder for Popular Models:

  • Tesla (All Models): Open the rear trunk. Locate the small circular cutout flap in the carpet lining directly behind the side of the charge port. Reach inside and pull the mechanical ring downward.

  • BYD Atto 3: Pop the front hood. Look right behind the plastic paneling of the charge port bay for a mechanical pull-loop. (Note: For the BYD Seal, this release is located behind a plastic guard inside the rear trunk).

  • MG (ZS EV): The MG ZS EV does not have a physical pull cord. If stuck, ensure the vehicle is turned off, then press the Lock and Unlock buttons on your key fob 3–4 times in a row to cycle the electronic pin.

  • Nissan Leaf: Open the hood. Find the plastic guard behind the grille port, pop the small cap off, and use a flat screwdriver to turn the release screw clockwise to mechanically wind back the lock.

Still stuck?

Call our emergency support line (in the app under Help & Support — we'll remotely reset the station to release our side of the lock. If your car still won't let go after that, the lock issue is on the vehicle's side, and your dealership can help.
